Dreaming Climate Consciousness Intensive: Building a World Together

This November, Between Words is hosting the Dreaming Climate Consciousness Intensive, a workshop for playwrights and creative writers in Victoria.

Climate change is one of the largest threats facing humanity, and it is still hard to talk about. We’d like to make room for those conversations, and for the creative work that can come out of them.

Over five days, a small group of writers will imagine a climate-changed future together, in all its tension and possibility, and meet each other along the way. They’ll invent a world from scratch, with its own history, rules, and fault lines, and then work out what climate change does to the people living in it.

If you care about what’s happening to the planet, like making things with other people, and want your creative work to be part of social and environmental change, we’d like you in the room.

Creating, not workshopping

This isn’t a workshop where you bring pages to be critiqued. The work is making something with other people.

Dreaming Climate Consciousness was created by theatre artist and facilitator Evan Medd, who will lead the sessions in Victoria. The process draws on the work of adrienne maree brown, Walidah Imarisha, and Donna Haraway, who have all written about imagination as a tool for social change. Science fiction can’t solve climate change, but it gives us a way to practice picturing futures we would want to live in, and to look honestly at the ones we wouldn’t.

The process has led to finished work before. The Major Matt Mason Collective developed their production Love & Rage through it.

Why we’re bringing it here

Because climate grief is real and, as an artist, I want ways to channel that exploration in our community.

I’ve taken part in two cohorts of Dreaming Climate Consciousness. They deepened my work in speculative fiction, and I came out of them with a draft pilot script. Building a world with other writers taught me more than I expected, and I wanted Victoria writers to have the chance to do it too.

Who it’s for

Playwrights and creative writers who want to collaborate and are curious about climate and science fiction themes. You don’t need to know climate science or have read much science fiction. Established and emerging creatives are both welcome.
