After fleeing war-torn Albania, childhood friends Mirela and Lena find refuge at a secluded, Orthodox convent deep in the forests of Thebes. The play will follow the sisters of Saint Euphrosynos as they prepare for the Great Lent, a holy month of fasting and pious study. As the sisters enter their fast, Lena tries to temper her sudden cravings for earthly pleasures. She spends her days in frenzied prayer and her nights gorging herself on honey-soaked figs, blood-red wine and raw red meat. But nothing can satiate her, and her hunger only grows as the convent draws closer to Pascha, an Easter feast celebrating Jesus’ resurrection. Lena’s feasting sets in motion a strange series of miracles which blur the line between the spiritual and the bodily, the sacred and the profane. When Mirela is offered initiation into the church, she is torn between the safety of the convent and the nun’s ritualized starvation, and her ravenous love for Lena.
