16 Feb We are starting a One-Act Festival!
Hello! Welcome to Between Words Theatre and the beginning of the Victoria One-Act Play Festival!
I’ve been involved in the community theatre scene in Calgary for over 8 years. Since moving to Victoria nearly 2 years ago I felt, as many have, that there is space for the theatre community to grow for people who are passionate about theatre and wanting opportunities to explore this art form.
It is our hope that this festival can inspire the Victoria theatre community to create, play, and discover – whether you’re an actor in a post-secondary institution looking for a chance to perform or you work outside of the arts and are eager to dust off your directing chops in your free time. We encourage you to spread the word across your networks – this is a great community opportunity for any designers, playwrights, directors or actors! As we are in our first year, word-of-mouth is essential to grow interest and support for our festival.
We believe theatre should be available to everyone, and so we will strive to do our best to reduce barriers to participation, while still staying true to the craft of building quality theatre.
The Festival will host a series of One-Act plays written and directed by local talent. We are happy to announce that the festival will take place at the Belfry from June 8-10 in the BMO Studio! We invite playwrights, directors and actors from a wide variety of communities; such as BIPOC, those who identify in the LGBTQ2S+, the young and the wise to apply. This is so we can showcase a variety of perspectives, voices and stories!
As you can tell, I am very excited about this. Having participated in two One-Act plays in Calgary, I know how much these platforms mean to budding creatives.
It does take a village to build a community, and therefore, there are a few roles we are looking for support with to help pull this festival together. If you are passionate about helping grow community theatre, please reach out! I have some roles in mind for people who are keen to help build this community together and privileged to be able to volunteer their time.
Dramatically,
Kurt
